The Right Fit: Choosing the right construction software
|
So you've decided to take the plunge and purchase construction software. First of all, good
for you - you've made a wise decision that will greatly impact your business. You will need to determine whether you need an all-in-one system including estimating, accounting, and project
management or a standalone job cost
accounting system. I can't make that decision for you because only you know your
business, but I do know that the bare minimum that every
contractor should have is a job cost accounting system. Without this, you will be leaving
yourself susceptible to countless problems. The all-in-one systems cost a pretty
penny; however, you will have all your data in one place. I deal in the job cost
accounting business so I will focus my attention there.
Job cost software is critical to the success of the construction company. I have seen too many
contractors forced into closing their doors because they were simply not able to keep track of their job
costs. Tragedy typically strikes when the contractor finally gets their first big job. They start out thinking
they can run the big jobs as haphazardly as their smaller jobs, but soon find out they have no idea where
they stand. They end up overspending and running through all their savings, investment money, etc. It's sad,
but luckily, it's preventable.
Enter job cost accounting software. When using construction accounting software, the contractor is almost
forced into tracking their job costs in a consistent and meaningful manner. Whether you are entering
invoices, timecards, or inventory transactions, you are prompted to record the costs to the appropriate
jobs. The end result is incredibly detailed job cost reporting that you will soon learn to live and breathe by.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, construction accounting software is the absolute minimum you must
have to run a successful construction company. Purchasing good estimating software is also very important, but only once
you have a handle on your job costs.
