opening accounting periods is too complicated and clumsy. could you guys try to make that a little more straight forward? i mean, it's easy once you know what to do, but it is not intuitive.

Tom,
We just put out an update that deals with your issue here. There are two options now, "Open Accounting Period" and "Close Accounting Period". I think it is much more intuitive now, just as requested!
